TUESDAY TALE~1

Kathleen Grieve (Contemporary Medical Romance)

~Unedited~At the last minute, I decided to try my hand at Tuesday Tales.  Not bad for my first attempt. Please excuse any typos!   It is PG, not wanting to get too racy for my first time out of the gate. I hope you enjoy and will come back as I rack up the heat level next week!

The local high school marching band tuned their instruments on there local football field located on the opposite side of the fence backing up to Mary’s backyard.  With a groan she rolled over and buried her head under the pillow.  What on earth possessed school administration to torture the neighborhood at dawn on a Saturday morning?

The uneven cacophony of sounds clashed as the students began their first song.  With any chance of catching a few more Zzz’s shot, Mary jumped out of bed and padded barefoot into the bathroom.  She splashed cold water on her face and gazed at her reflection.  Tired, worn red-rimmed eyes and the underlying dark circles forming the bags under normally clear baby blues mocked her.

Maybe she tried to do too much, too fast?  Just because she was the only female intern on the trauma team fresh out of surgical residency didn’t mean she had to push so damn hard.  Her lips twisted.  Yes, that’s exactly what it meant.  Trauma Surgery was a just like being in a Men’s Club, complete with the “No Girls Allowed” sign posted on the locker room door.

After brushing her teeth, she went to close the patio door left open during the night to let the cool breeze inside and air out her small house which had been closed up tight while she’d been making rounds at the hospital.  The clear glass door faced the football field and from her perspective, she could actually view the students gleaming in their red and white uniforms as she glanced over the fence.

God, was she such a grouch? They’re just kids, participating in those grand extracurricular activities to get them further in life.  A slight commotion on the field caught her attention.  The marching band no longer made music and one student near where the tuba players stood waved frantically for an instructor.  Drawn by the chaos, Mary stepped onto her porch and leaned over the rough wooden railing.

A student seemed to be lying down on the field.  Adrenaline surged and she took the steps two at a time, tripped over the corner of a lawn chair, and climbed the fence, ignoring the sting of splinters in her palms, scraping her knees,  and the throbbing of her foot as she’d stubbed her toe.

As she neared, an instructor spoke into the phone.  “We’re at Johnson’s Field.  Please hurry!” he said.

“I’m a doctor,” Mary said, breathless from her sprint across the field.  “What’s her name?”  While she waited for a response, she assessed the young girl, feeling for a pulse and shaking her gently to try to get a response.

The man gave her a dubious look.  “Jenny, ah Jenny Stanton,” he said.

“Well, Jenny is not breathing.  Is there an AED on campus? And did you call 911?” Mary asked as she started to do chest compressions.

Mary had just renewed her Basic Life Support and was extremely thankful she had.  According to the new CPR guidelines, rescue breathing was not necessary, only compress the chest about a depth of one and a half inches, hard and fast so that the heart will beat about 100 beats per min.   An AED was an automatic external defibrillator and once in place will analyze the girl’s heart rhythm.

“Yes, an ambulance is on the way, but I’m afraid due to budget cuts, we weren’t approved to have AED’s here at school,” he said.  “Umm, do you need help?”

“Do you know CPR?” she asked.

He shook his head.  “No.”

She glanced around at all the frightened faces of the students milling about.  “Crowd control and reassurance would be nice.”

Until the EMS crew arrived, Jenny Stanton had Mary’s full attention.  Her arms strained with the effort to compress the young girl’s chest and Mary's breath came out in short pants.

After what seemed like an eternity, the paramedics came and took over.  While they stowed Jenny away in the back of the ambulance, Mary flexed her fingers and rubbed her arms, trying to dispel the rubbery, numb feeling.  This certainly hadn’t been how she’d envisioned her first day off in a month.  She hoped the girl would be all right.

“Did you say you were a doctor?”

Mary turned her head and glanced at the marching band leader.  His soft brown eyes traveled from the flannel short shorts to the cropped cotton t-shirt she’d worn to bed, missing nothing.

“Yes, I’m a surgeon in my first year of trauma residency,” she said.  She tried not to notice the stubble on his angular jaw, the broadness of his shoulders, and the definite all male interest.  It had been a long time since a man looked at her as a woman and not as a leper out for his position on the Trauma Team.  It surprised her how much she missed the base male/female interaction.

His gaze warmed.  “I bet you see a lot of interesting stuff.”

She shrugged, not wanting to talk about work.  “Sometimes.”

“Look,” he scrubbed a hand through his dark hair.  “This is totally inappropriate…”

Mary smiled.  “Yes, it is.”  But she was in desperate need of inappropriate right now.  She waved him on and started to walk backward.  “I live over there,” she said as she flicked a thumb in the direction of her porch.  “Go deal with this and why don’t you stop by later and give me an update?”

A slow, sexy smile spread across his face displaying dimples.  She was a sucker for dimples.  She nearly sighed out loud, but caught herself just in time.

“You can count on it,” he said.

From this day forward, Mary knew she'd be paying much closer attention to the marching band playing on Johnson's Field.

SIX SENTENCE SUNDAY~28

Yeah! It's Sunday and you all know what that means! Thank you so much for stopping by and encouraging me! It really means a lot to me.  Here's a little something new I've been working on that is yet untitled! I hope it's the beginning of a new kick ass series!

The target was close. She cocked her head, listening intently. The whoosh of a blade sliced through the air, then a sharp crack before the metal cored through wood. She closed her eyes and inhaled a ragged breath, using her inner sight to size up the male she’d been called upon to seduce. Even at this distance Tatum could sense the heat of well muscled flesh as blood coursed through his veins.  She could even smell the distinct, delicious all male scent as he worked up a sweat.

That's all for now.  To check out some other great authors and add to your TBR pile, go to www.sixsunday.com

Enjoy what's left of your weekend! Hope all of you on the East Coast are safe and sound!

They are truly appreciated!  Here's a little something from my wip, something new I've been dabbling with that I hope to make into a series.

“One. Two. Three. Jump!”

Helicopter blades whirling overhead, Agent Tatum Wilder obeyed the command without hesitation and leapt from the open door into the frozen, black night.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT~ANGELA S. STONE!!!

Good Morning all!  It is my pleasure to introduce to you Angela S. Stone and her debut novel released this week, Sometimes It's Fate available now from Phaze at this link: http://phaze.com/book.php?title=Sometimes+It%27s+Fate  or at Amazon here http://amzn.to/pcKCeH

I was first introduced to Angela's work through a blog hop I participate in each week called, Six Sentence Sunday.  From what I've read, this is a tender heartfelt m/m romance where the characters have some surmountable odds to leap before reaching that happily ever after!

Blurb:
Jason McCarthy is gay. He’s also a police officer living in a small-minded northern New Brunswick town where being gay could spell the end of his career. When an impending snowstorm threatens to strand his best friend and policing partner, David, Jason offers up his spare room for the night--a move that reveals Jason’s secret, and changes their friendship and lives forever.

David Richard isn’t gay--at least he doesn’t think he is. He knows he loves his best friend, and he admits to feelings that had started after a tragic accident almost a year before. When David acts on these feelings, it doesn’t go well, leaving both men alone and hurt. Jason, however, doesn’t think twice about stepping in and rescuing David’s children when their mother abandons them. The move brings David and Jason back together, but Jason’s past rears its ugly head and they both have to make difficult decisions that are sometimes best left up to fate.

Excerpt:
Jason struggled with his key, trying to unlock the main door to his apartment building. He was bone tired, and cold. The power had been restored to the community by mid-morning. A main transmission line had been taken out by a falling tree and it took crews over twelve hours to repair it.   The roads were barely passable and David’s car had slid twice on the way back from the office, despite the studded winter tires.  Jason’s SUV was, unfortunately, still not ready. The dealership promised tomorrow as the parts had only arrived late in the afternoon and the mechanic had been unable to make it out of his driveway.  The parking lot at his apartment building, although cleared of snow sometime during the morning, was once more covered in drifts.  Jason jiggled the lock and the door finally opened allowing Jason into the warm hallway.

He stomped the snow off of his boots and trudged up the stairs to his apartment. This door actually opened easily, and his apartment was warm and bright. As he peeled off his winter jacket, he was grateful for the warmth, letting it sink into his bones as he hung the jacket off the back of the chair next to the electric radiator. He went into the bedroom and immediately stripped out of his damp uniform.

Most of the day had been spent outside in the cold and the snow. A major accident had closed Highway Eleven and caused traffic chaos. Four people had been sent to the hospital and the last he had heard one was air-lifted to Moncton in critical condition.

Jason’s skin was cool and clammy as he removed his clothes. Taking a towel from the linen closet, he padded into the bathroom, switching the light and the fan on. Stripping out of his boxer briefs, Jason stepped into the tub and fiddled with the taps until hot water poured from them. He then flicked the button so that hot water coursed over his body.

He stood under the spray for a long time, his body slowly defrosting. No one had told him when he signed up for this that there would be days when he would stand in knee-high snow, being pelted in all directions by freezing winds while directing traffic for hours on end.

Once he was a bit warmer, his mind wandered to when he woke up this morning. It was a good half hour before the alarm was due to go off when he suddenly woke. He was disoriented at first; he was in his room, his bed, with a warm male body next to him.  He was curled up next to his partner; he was so close he could even catch the unique scent of David. Jason had to stifle a groan when he realised that his morning wood had turned into a complete hard-on in just a few seconds. He pulled away slightly and turned onto his stomach, hiding his obvious attraction. There was nothing he could do to get rid of it. There was no power so a shower was out of the question and it’s not like he could jerk off with David a few inches from him.

Jason was alone now though and he could certainly do something about the hard-on that had returned.  He stroked himself a couple of times, picturing what he wished could have happened that morning. He wished he could have pulled off David’s pyjama pants and gone down on him. Jason had caught glimpses of David at the gym when they showered, enough to know he was well endowed and uncut. Jason pictured himself swallowing David’s thick member, playing with the foreskin as he sucked him off, watching as David moaned and squirmed beneath him.

Jason groaned loudly and braced himself against the wall of the shower.  He fisted himself rapidly as his orgasm overtook him.  He grunted David’s name as hot streams of cum exploded from his cock, continuing to stroke himself until he collapsed against the wall, spent.  He took a couple of ragged breaths as his body began to recover from the long overdue release.

The hot water was starting to cool down a bit as he soaped himself up, so he quickly washed his short hair before rinsing and turning the water off before it went cold.  He dried off and wrapped a towel around his waist before he padded out of the bathroom. The corner of a familiar jacket caught his eye as he left the bathroom, so Jason made his way into the kitchen. David’s jacket was on the back of one of the kitchen chairs and his boots were next to Jason’s on the mat.

How long had he been here? “David?” Jason called out.

“I’m here,” David called from the livingroom.

“Just checking,” Jason said. What was David doing here?

Going back to his bedroom, Jason threw on clean underwear, a pair of sweat pants and an old t-shirt.  He felt a little guilty for jerking off to thoughts of his policing partner, particularly when he was just in the next room. Jason sincerely hoped David couldn’t hear what he was doing over the roar of the shower. Jason pulled on a pair of warm thick athletic socks then padded into the livingroom. David was on the couch, still in his uniform. “I thought you were going home,” he said.

“Roads are drifted in. I can’t get my car through,” David explained. “I didn’t think you’d mind my company until they get better.”

“I don’t mind,” Jason said nodding towards David’s uniform. “Why don’t you go change? You’ve got to be freezing.”

“I am a bit damp,” David admitted. “I only brought one change of clothes.”

“Come on, I’ll find you something.” Jason went into his bedroom, first stopping in the bathroom to scoop up his dirty underwear and drop it in the laundry basket. He dug out a pair of flannel pyjama pants, a long-sleeve t-shirt and a pair of socks. “There are towels in the linen closet,” he told David as he tossed him the clothes.

“Is there any hot water left?” he asked.

“Well…”

David laughed and disappeared into the bathroom.

As David changed, Jason rattled around in the kitchen, trying to find something in his freezer to make them for dinner. He hadn’t gone shopping because he hadn’t been planning on being home for the next four days. Finding some salmon, he pulled it from the freezer and dropped it into the microwave to defrost. He raked through the cupboard and came up with a package of microwavable rice before he set the oven to pre-heat at 350.   He wasn’t Julia Child but he could come up with a decent dinner for the two of them if he had to.

“I feel like a kid in these clothes.”

Jason turned around to find David standing in the middle of the kitchen. The pants were a good four inches too long and David all but swam in the shirt Jason had given him.

Jason couldn’t help but laugh at the older man. “I might be able to find something smaller.”

“It’s alright,” David said rolling up his sleeves. “It’s just for a little while. As long as I don’t trip and kill myself I’ll be okay.”

“Is salmon okay for dinner?” Jason asked as the microwave beeped at him to flip the package over. “I don't have a lot of food in the house. I was planning on going to Moncton on my days off.”

“You don’t have to make me dinner,” David pointed out but Jason shot him a look and David sighed. “Salmon is fine. Do you have any vegetables?”

“There are some in the freezer I think,” Jason said, watching as David opened the freezer. “Behind the ice cream maybe.”

David pulled out several items until he located a crushed bag of frozen vegetables.  He replaced the other items and pulled a bowl down from above the sink, pouring in a decent amount before replacing the bag in the freezer. “So who were you planning to see in Moncton?”

“Craig,” Jason replied pulling a pan from underneath the stove.

“Is Craig your boyfriend?” David asked, curious to find more about this aspect of his friend’s life.

Jason laughed. “Craig isn’t anyone’s boyfriend,” he said. David didn’t say anything, so Jason elaborated. “Craig is one of my best friends.” He gave David an apologetic look. “Okay my best gay friend. I met him when I was in university,” he added, pausing to retrieve the now mostly defrosted salmon from the microwave. “We’ve been friends with benefits for years, on and off depending on if one of us was in a relationship and proximity to the other.”

“What does Craig do?” David asked, leaning against the fridge, watching Jason make dinner.

“He’s a pilot. Can you hand me the white wine out of the fridge?”

David pulled out the bottle Jason had opened the night before and handed it to him. “A pilot, like he flies planes?”

“Yeah, he flies for Air Canada.” Jason uncorked the bottle and poured a generous amount into the pan. “He does a Moncton-Montreal run and back twice a day. He works four on, one on call, four off.”

“That’s not a bad schedule,” David replied. Their schedule was a mix depending on the coverage needed.

Jason nodded. “Yeah except we’ve been working opposite shifts for a while so I haven’t had the chance to see him in like two months. Now the one time we’re both free and there’s a snowstorm and my car is in the shop,” Jason complained as he opened the door to the oven and popped the pan inside.

“You sound a little frustrated.”

“You have no idea.”

“I haven’t been with anyone since Carole and I broke up and that was like two and a half years ago.”

“Okay, so you do have an idea,” Jason conceded with a smirk.

David made a noise of agreement.  He opened the fridge and pulled out two beers. He offered one to Jason but he refused. “I thought you liked beer,” David said replacing the extra beer in the fridge.

“I prefer wine. I always have.” Jason pulled a wine glass down from the cupboard. “I just drink beer when I’m around the guys so, ” Jason trailed off then smiled. “So I don’t seem gay I guess.”

What else did Jason do so he didn’t seem ‘gay’?  “You don’t have to,” David said finally.

“I don’t have to what?” Jason asked. He added butter to the bowl of frozen vegetables as he spoke, glancing down at the bowl in confusion.

“I mean you don’t have to pretend,” David clarified. “Most people won’t care if you’re gay or not, the ones that do, Fuck ’em, they’re not worth the time.”

“You don’t remember Michael Long do you?”

David closed his eyes, trying to recall. “The name rings a bell,” he said finally.

“I was just a probie,” Jason explained. “It was maybe my second or third week on the job. I was training with John Wright.”

MAMMOGRAM TIME!!!

Good morning!  When I get off of work in a few hours, I will be getting my mammogram.  I totally blew it off last year---bad nurse/patient that I am!  Not for lack of trying. I did schedule the appointment--twice--but had to cancel.  With my family history of breast cancer, this is one medical test I should do every year.

NO EXCEPTIONS!!

I've been good this year.  All of my annual exams/blood work have been done.  I just have this one last test and then some follow up blood work to check how my thyroid medication is working for me and hopefully I will be done with this crap, umm, necessary stuff for the year.

The boob squishing exam is not fun!  You're placed in this freezing room, half naked and have your breasts squashed one at a time into a pan cake while being contorted by the tech to bend and twist at an awkward angle.  Can't wait...NOT!

In the meantime, I thought I would post this video I found on Youtube that makes me laugh out loud!

Enjoy your Monday!!

SIX SENTENCE SUNDAY~27

Thanks for stopping by.  I am honored that you'd spend part of your Sunday with me.  And now a little something I pulled from a drawer and dusted off. My first endeavor at writing the great American novel which was rejected. Maybe after my Dating Series is completed I will overhaul it and sub it again.  Tentatively titled "A Premonition of Murder".

He was coming for her.

The realization jolted her from her vision. Her head reeled with fresh pain and she choked back the bitter bile that rushed into her mouth.  She glanced at the clock on the wall behind her desk.

He.  Was.  Coming.

As always, stop by http://www.sixsunday.com/ to read snippets from some really talented authors!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

HOOKER SATURDAY~1

Wanted to try something a little different on my blog.  One line "hooks" from current books and works in progress.

As I work out the details, hopefully this concept will evolve.  I know everyone has time constraints, but if you have a few minutes, it would be nice to know whether the single sentence intrigued you enough to want to read more.

So, here's my first one from my book, The Doctor's Deception available from Amazon.com here:
http://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Deception-Kathleen-Grieve/dp/1601542879/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1313846790&sr=8-2

He held pumping hearts in his hand during surgery every day, surely he could melt Faith Daniel's heart?

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT~LONDON SAINT JAMES

Welcome!  Today, I'm featuring fellow Evernight Publishing Author, London Saint James!!  Her latest release, ENCHANTED, THE HEART OF WINTER is available today at http://www.evernightpublishing.com/
BLURB: Can love withstand the test of time?

Winter never truly understood love, nor did she have time for men until she met Austin Wells Carlyle. He was the man who would rock her world to its foundations. He would test her notions, give her something to believe in, and change her misguided thoughts regarding happily ever after. Strangely, she was going to allow him be the one thing she never believed in—her soul mate.

EXCERPT:
I stood on my tiptoes in order to press my lips to the hollow beneath his ear.  I closed my eyes, took a breath, and wanted to dissolve.
     He smells so good.
     “Winter,” he whispered softly.
“Shh.” I opened my eyes to see him. “You told me once you would not look until I wanted you to, do you remember that?”
     “Yes.”
“Well….” I dropped my hands from his neck. “I want you to look.”
His returning smile took my breath.  I had to look away from his eyes, which was almost impossible.  I glanced at my hands.  They should have been shaking, but they were not.  My hands found Austin’s shirt.  I unbuttoned each button slowly foregoing the urge to hurry.  With a tremulous breath, I ran my hand down his skin, exposing the perfect alabaster of his muscular chest.  His shirt was off and on the floor.  He’s so beautiful, I thought.
My lips found his chest and liked the feeling of his flesh beneath them.  My fingers outlined the angles and planes of his strong rippled stomach, moving slowly around his tight waist.  I watched his skin, his reaction to my touch.  The muscles beneath my touch seemed to jump, flex, relax.  I could not believe this beautiful man was here with me.  If I could, I would look at him; worship Austin’s perfection for the rest of my life.  My eyes were filled with more beauty in this moment than ever before.
I allowed my hands to find and trace the outline of his wide shoulders, follow the contour of his muscular back.  My body moved around him while my eyes, hungry, followed my fingers which were lost to the canvas of his flawless skin.  Touching him was like finding a secret.  I pressed my lips to his shoulder blade.  He groaned.  I burned.  My teeth grazed the surface of his skin.  My tongue followed the line of him while my hands ran freely over the surface of his biceps, his forearms.
I had to wonder in awe.  A part of my mind told me such beauty should be a dream, because no one could be this fabulous.  But touching him grounded me in reality.  I had never seen anything so magnificent, so beautiful.  It was in this moment I knew.  I knew in the whole of my life I would never want anyone but Austin Carlyle.  I would indeed love him, forever.

Mixed Emotions~

Okay, since the end of December, 2010, I'd changed my life style to eat healthier and exercise.  Goal: lose those last ten pounds that have been hanging on.  Weight has fluxed--lose a few...gain a few.  But, primarily has remained the same.  I've toned some muscles in my arms, legs, glutes.

Basically, I cut out all fatty, greasy foods; soda; processed foods, and cut way--unfortunately--way back on Starbucks.  The change in lifestyle hasn't been hard.  I've felt better and feel good about making choices that are good for me.

Other than the last couple of weeks (Cuz life got in the way with crazy schedule and then vacation) I was at the gym 4-5 days a week and running 16-20 miles.  I kept close tabs on calorie intake and calorie burn and was burning more calories than eating.

So, why wasn't I losing the weight?  It's a measly 10 pounds!  The contestants on the Biggest Loser do that and more in a week!  Discussing the subject with friends and fellow health care providers I got all sorts of advice.

--Try muscle confusion...
--You need to up your circuit training....
--Oh, you're just building muscle, so you won't lose weight on the scale...

Well, I went to the doctor to get my yearly physical stuff done and my lab work came up with something abnormal--a high TSH level.  TSH is test is the test of choice for evaluating thyroid function and/or symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.  If the level is high, your thyroid is not making enough and if it is low, your thyroid is making too much.  Kind of odd way to measure it, huh? I was a little confused by that at first.

Let me back up a bit.  The thyroid is responsible for regulating your metabolism.  My doctor basically explained my problem like this.  "Your TSH level is high which means your metabolism is sluggish.  It's like revving a car engine and you're not going anywhere.  The harder you hit the gas, the higher the level and instead of burning out the engine, you're burning out your thyroid."

Now I have the reason why I haven't been able to lose those ten pounds.  Good news, right?  I guess.  But now I have to take synthroid every day for the rest of my life.  Synthroid is a medication that is a replacement for a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism.

Cripes!  I can't even remember to take my vitamin every day!  I've resorted to setting the alarm on my phone to remind me.  How pathetic is that? Whatever works, I guess.  But in addition to taking the medication, I had to have an ultra sound of my thyroid done just to "make sure you don't have a tumor or something that could be affecting your thyroid".  More cheery news, doc!

Oh! And it gets better.  Me--MISS NEEDLE PHOBIC-- (Yes, I deal with needles every day at work, but they aren't pointed in my direction!!!) has to have lab work drawn off an on until my TSH is where doc wants it.  Forgot the parameters because while I was digesting the lab draw part, he was rattling on about ruling out other "diseases" that affect the thyroid and while I'm getting my TSH redrawn, he was going to have the lab draw additional blood for those tests, too.  Oh, JOY!

I did the ultra sound yesterday.  Looked like this chick below, but I actually fell asleep while the tech was doing it cuz I'd gone after work in the morning and was super tired. LOL.

Guess I will find out what's in store for me within the next couple of weeks.  Just feel like my body is in EPIC FAIL mode.  If the 40's are supposed to be the new 20's (or 30's?) then why do you get stuck doing all these medical tests and get stuck taking medication for the rest of your life?

Okay, rant is over.  Thanks for listening! LOL.
Enjoy your Monday!

SIX SENTENCE SUNDAY~26

Yeah! It's Sunday and time for another Six! Moving on, I'm gonna go back to my wip, Dating Impossible, where Jett's twin brother, Dr. Cruz Avery has just won his challenge against my heroine JJ in beer pong...

He drummed his fingers on the leather steering wheel.  Why couldn’t JJ just have quit while she’d been ahead?  The dynamic duo of Doctor/Respiratory Therapist started out strong, but soon plummeted under his relentless attack.  His partner, Angie might as well have not even bothered being on his team, she’d sucked balls.  Amused at the innuendo, he smiled.

Time to get his Lush Princess inside.
